5 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Roulette

This time, we’ve decided to share five little known yet interesting facts about the much-loved roulette. If you love the game as much as we do, you’d enjoy these fun facts!

Casino games are steeped in history and a collection of interesting tales to tell; what with most of these games originating from years back. As a casino enthusiast, you’d probably be an expert of all types of gambling games but merely playing these games only allows you to explore strategies and techniques. Perhaps spending a little more time unraveling the intriguing history behind these gambling games would give you an entirely new perspective to the game .

This time, we have decided to dig a little deeper on the much loved casino game, roulette. Undoubtedly the most popular game in many gambling houses, the jury’s still out on why exactly these games rank higher as compared to the rest. On our part, we’ve got a titanic-worth of reasons for it and we’ve decided to run through some very interesting facts on this game. Below, our top 5 interesting discoveries:

Fun Fact #1 An accidental invention

We have all heard of Blaise Pascal, one of the prominent mathematicians, a genius of the 17th century and the man who introduced the theory of probabilities. He invented the complex theorems as well as the antidote for all these convoluted calculations; the Pascaline, the ancestor of our modern day calculator. In addition to all these impressive creations, he also gave us the roulette wheel.

The objective of Pascal’s experiment was to create a device to continuously rotate without the aid of any form of energy. He was attempting to develop something called the perpetual motion machine, intended to defy the law of physics which turned out to be unsuccessful.

This failed experiment along with some apposite modifications to the wheel numbers by two French men Francois and Louis Blanc led to the birth of our fancy roulette tables today. While Pascal may not have imagined the wheel to evolve into an iconic casino game, roulette is undeniably the brain child of this French scientist.

Fun Fact #2: Pop culture status

This casino game in particular sets out a different tone from the rest of the games, one that is more glitzy and attractive to most people. This could be where Hollywood played its part by aiding the already profitable industry, giving this wheel a cult status of its own.

We can take a stroll down to the black and white era; Casablanca 1942, with a memorable scene of Humphrey Bogart giving out his roulette wheel strategy on where to put the chips, to Bond’s intense performance at the gambling house in Casino Royale 2006.

The amount of movies revolving the drama behind the wheels are just too many to list down; and if you are interested to read some of the best movies on casinos, head on over to: Casino Royale and 6 Better Movies to Watch Online. Apart from films, the popularity of this gambling game could be traced back to the culture of casino goers and number of legendary wins associated with the game.

Fun Fact #3: Edvard Munch’s Muse

The expressionist who painted The Scream; Edvard Munch had been one of the finest artist who mastered expressing real life scenarios on canvases. At The Roulette Table in Monte Carlo (1982), was an underappreciated product of Munch’s great art pieces in his time. However, Munch’s conceptualised gambling scenario now probably is one of the most popular casino-related artwork of our time.

Much like the faint scream you can hear when you gaze too long at ‘The Scream’, this painting surely evokes the feelings and emotions one would anticipate in a casino house. Viewers staring into this painting can easily recognise the mood in a casino hall; the tenseness, the chatters and the aura of uncertainty shrouding the roulette table.

At one glance this could be just another artwork but Munch’s undulant paint strokes slowly gives life to this canvas, which is one of the greatest memento from Munch’s visit to Monte Carlo.

Fun Fact #4: The Laser Roulette

Laser roulette sounds like a variation of the popular casino game but in actuality is a hack device to make calculated winnings. In 2004, three friends made quite a profitable sum at the roulette table not by luck, but by their high tech devices on the phone.

The equipment that went against the odds of the wheel was this mini laser hidden in the phone with the ability to precisely measure the speed of ball. Big wins bring in big suspicions and the authorities reported these guys for fraud. Since, there were no actual evidence found to prove this, the fraudsters walked away freely with more than a million at the end of the day!

Don’t bother trying this one out, gambling houses these days are much advanced and are more likely to prevent these shenanigans from the beginning.

Fun Fact #5: It’s the Devil’s Game

The game in itself is not implicated to any satanic worshipping neither is the creation of it. Although, there were few theories that pointed to the Blanc brothers’ possible pact with the Devil in reinventing the wheel. We’ve decided to dismiss the much darker side of the internet for now (albeit inarguably an interesting research for another post.)

The term is simply coined so because of the combination of the roulette wheel numbers from 0 to 36. Sum of these numbers would be the infamous number of the beast or 666. It makes you think why you’d be so drawn to this game now, doesn’t it?
